Secondary Workshops

Inside "The Ring"

Presented and conducted by Tim Burke, these hour-long sessions provide GCSE and A level aged students with an intimate introduction to the symphony orchestra, looking at how instruments combine to create orchestral textures, and an exploration of how music is used to highlight drama using music from The Ring as an example. Using a smaller line up of instruments than the full Ring Cycle - from an arrangement by Alfons Abbass published by Schott Music - Tim Burke will annotate Wagner’s music,  describing the story of each opera in sequence, with help from photographic stills from Opera North’s own Ring Cycle projected onto a screen. Thesession is aimed particularly at GCSE and A Level pupils, but would work well for anyone in that age group with an interest in music.
