Nottingham Music Service (NMS) believes that every child should have the opportunity to progress and thrive in their music making. We support schools and pupils at every stage of their musical journey—from first access to advanced ensembles—creating clear, inclusive progression routes that nurture both talent and enthusiasm.
Our programmes are designed to help schools meet the Model Music Curriculum and National Plan for Music Education expectations while offering children inspiring opportunities to grow musically, socially and creatively.
How this supports your school’s music curriculum
Our progression routes support schools in delivering a broad, balanced and ambitious music curriculum, as set out in the Model Music Curriculum (MMC) and National Plan for Music Education. They help schools meet key expectations by:
- Providing regular instrumental learning through WCET and follow-on
- Supporting ensemble opportunities such as Area Bands and school-based groups
- Enabling access to choirs and vocal ensembles through rehearsal links and city events
- Encouraging musical progression through signposting to extra-curricular groups and formal music grades
- Helping schools demonstrate high-quality music provision in their School Music Development Plans
By engaging with our progression offer, schools can fulfil national expectations to provide:
- In instrumental ensemble opportunity for all pupils
- A school choir or singing group
- Access to live musical performances, both as participants and audience members
- Signposting to progression routes outside the classroom
- Access to quality-assured providers and NMS partnerships
